Protest through Poetry and Performance

Teens will explore performance as protest, analyzing historical protest poetry, song, and performance art. Inspired by poets such as Joy Harjo, Maya Angelou, Gwendolyn Brooks, Lucille Clifton and Lalo Delgado, performers such as Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke, Lalo Guerrero, and Green Day, as well as other performance artists, students will express themselves by creating original protest performances. Students will gain writing, text analysis, and performance skills. The class will end with a final performance of student work.
